Our state forests have many values and uses. We aim to balance:
- landscape, natural, cultural and heritage values
- recreation
- amenity
- land uses, including apiculture and timber harvesting.
Allocating forest 'zones' that restrict some activities is a key way we do this. This is to protect priority values such as:
- significant plants and animals
- vulnerable habitats
- historic sites
- recreation areas
We have used forest management zoning for many years. The Forest Management Zoning Accountability Framework 2022 is a contemporary approach for reporting on progress against its zoning targets set by the Secretary. The framework will:
- deliver greater transparency and accountability for our forest management zoning
- provide 12-monthly updates on zoning actions
- provide 5-yearly reporting of forest zoning targets
